Aurora has undertaken an energetic outreach, assessment, and case management project to further coordinate and collaborate with providers serving homeless persons. The community-wide 1997 Continuum of Care Committee determined its top priority to address homelessness in Evansville was to develop a means to provide this much-needed service, and selected Aurora to be the project sponsor. The team has been in operation since June 1998. This team responds to the ever-increasing needs and concerns of homeless individuals and families in our community. Street Outreach & EngagementThe Homeless Outreach Team seeks to identify and engage persons who are homeless.
Once identified, the outreach team offers and provides:
Intensive Case Management in Emergency SheltersMembers of the Homeless Outreach Team offer intensive case management services for clients who are temporarily sheltered at House of Bread & Peace, Dorothea MacGregor Family Shelter, and United Caring Shelters. Services offered are similar to those noted above for Street Outreach. Contracted Services in Transitional HousingAurora provides case management services for the residents of the United Caring Apartments, transitional housing units, through our Case Coordinator, Gary Austin, whose office is at United Caring Shelters, 324 NW 6th St.
Information & Referral
Aurora staff provides phone-based information and referral options to numerous individuals daily. We also compile listings on various topics such as rental units, employment, medical care, financial assistance, shelters, hot meals and other resources (see link below). Our office is also able to make food referrals through the Food Pantry Consortium and to other independent pantries as needed. Local phone access and resource lists are available to anyone.
Community Services Resource Guide (updated Dec. 2009)
Fresh Startsbasic essentials for survival on the streets OR for setting up house again The Homeless Outreach Team (H.O.T.) consistently gets requests for household items and furniture to assist in the establishment of independent housing. H.O.T. has responded by advertising for items as needed and providing pick-up and delivery of collected items. The Team also has several regular contributors that provide gifts-in-kind for the outreach program. The donation program is limited due to a small amount of storage space, staff time, and moving capability. Housing Starter Kits are created throughout the year to assist clients who are re-entering housing after experiencing homelessness. Outreach Bags are assembled with nonperishable food items and given out to clients during the weekly outreach trip. During the holidays, Outreach Ornaments and Adopt-a-Client programs assist us in supplying items for our clients at Christmas and throughout the year.
Massages
Each week, at homeless service provider sites, a team member administers a 10- to 20-minute upper back and neck massage to several people who are homeless.
