Purpose StatementWe gather to remember our neighbors ... neighbors unknown and unnoticed by many of us ... neighbors we place in a category called "the homeless." We gather to affirm that they were part of us ... and that we are lacking not
only by their passing, but by our collective inability to affirm them as part of
our community while they were living. We gather to give thanks for their lives, to recognize that they were sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers ... each with significant gifts and abilities to share, each with challenges and barriers to overcome. They faced the same questions, the same heartaches, the same doubts and fears that we all face. All too often, they faced them alone ... all too often they were invisible to the larger community.
We gather to commit ourselves to healing the divisions that exist between races of peoples, between those who have plenty and those who want, between those who rest their heads easily upon protected pillows and those who sleep in angst in shelters and hiding places. We gather to repent of our collective brokenness and to find healing and hope.
