Candles of Remembrance

Candles have long been used as a way to remember those who are no longer physically present with us.

The candles that burn on the Homeless Memorial Service table burn brightly to remind us of lives that were cut short, at times because of homelessness.

They were moms or dads, sons or daughters, brothers or sisters, and neighbors or acquaintances.  Some were well-known and others were more obscure.

Yet, each candle represents a member of our community who died while being homeless sometime since 1989.

We use a variety of candle holders, some unique size, shape, color and age to portray the uniqueness of the individuals they represent.  The candles, as well, are of various heights, some more well-worn than others, some represent a long life, while others represent a shorter life, impacted much too soon by the effects of homelessness.

Each year, we add candles to remember those who have died in the current year.  We also light a candle for the "unknown" to represent those who may have died without our knowledge.

We celebrate their lives and the contribution they have made to our life experience.  We acknowledge that we are richer today for having known them.

As we reflect on their lives, we also mourn the fact that in the richest nation in the world, we continue to have record numbers of families and individuals without homes.
